One day, theTimescame up with a tip on a drug that had a side effect of being called “Viagra.” The Times decided to go ahead with the drug after a month of research, a drug that was the drug’s first, and an oral pill that was the drug’s last. But then the Times’ medical chief, Dr. Michael DeBake, decided to get in touch with the public about the drug, and he was in the process of getting a letter from the FDA seeking information about the drug. In the letter, DeBake mentioned the drug’s side effects and other drugs that he had heard about. He said he had written to the FDA about the drug’s side effects.
“This is about a drug that has been clinically tested for safety,” DeBake said. “And I was like, ‘OK, we can go ahead with that.’”
One of the key messages the FDA had to reach in response to the drug’s side effects was that it was a good drug for a number of reasons. But because of the side effects, the FDA wanted to try and find some way to keep the drug from being prescribed to people who had a history of heart problems and were taking drugs to treat heart disease.
